Our story

Established in 1974 and operating as an autonomous organisation since 2001, General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) is the national peak independent body and voice for future GPs.

Our key objective is to improve health for all Australians by strengthening the future of general practice.

We provide impartial information and professional support services to future GPs, including expert advice, extra education and exam support as well as advocacy for your employment and GP training.

We facilitate four national peer networks:

  • General Practice Students Network (GPSN) – for medical students
  • Future GP – for prevocational doctors
  • Advisory Council – for GP registrars
  • GPRA Alumni – for new GP Fellows and established GPs.

Our almost 20,000 members are the future GP workforce and they reflect every stage of the journey to becoming a GP. We represent:

  • Medical students
  • Prevocational doctors
  • GPs in training (all GP Specialist pathways)
  • New Fellows.

We support all our members (medical students, prevocational doctors, GP registrars and new Fellows) by:

Negotiating the National Terms and Conditions for the Employment of Registrars (NTCER)
Advocating on educational, training, employment and policy issues in general practice
Providing advice on employment negotiations and training matters
Strengthening general practice’s appeal through communications, peer support and networks and professional leadership
Delivering events for networking, further education, wellbeing and professional development
Assisting with exam preparation and education support (all pathways)
Providing special member-only services and discounts with partner organisations.
