GPRA launches Cultural Education Grants to enhance health care for First Nations communities
General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA), the only independent national advocate for future General Practitioners (GPs), is proud to launch Cultural Education Grants for Northern Territory-based GP registrars.
The grants of up to $500 are available for GP registrars from all pathways to help them access further cultural education development opportunities to support their GP training in the NT.
Applicants can apply for cultural education courses and/or purchase relevant resources, which may include:
extending their knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture
exploring how attitudes and values can influence perceptions, assumptions and behaviours in a clinical setting, and
identifying other key ways a GP can be more culturally aware for their First Nations patients.
GPRA President Dr Karyn Matterson said these grants marked a significant step forward in fostering cultural awareness among healthcare providers to better serve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“As the only national independent voice for future GPs, GPRA is dedicated to promoting equitable healthcare access for all Australians, particularly First Nations peoples,” she said.
“Our Cultural Education Grants initiative aims to empower GP registrars in the NT to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and healthcare needs.
“GPRA wants to step up and help support Aboriginal and Torres Islander peoples get access to future GPs.”
Dr Matterson highlighted the pivotal role of cultural awareness in delivering holistic healthcare.
“Understanding the cultural nuances of working with First Nations communities is fundamental to providing culturally safe primary health care services,” she said.
“Through the Cultural Education Grants, we aim to equip future GPs with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide culturally competent care.”
Eligible registrars may receive reimbursement of up to $500 towards cultural education expenses.
The application period for the Cultural Education Grants will close on 30 October. For more information about the Cultural Education Grants and the application process, visit the GPRA Cultural Education Grants web page.
