Dear GPRA Members,
I was delighted to announce the completion of the 2024 review of the National Terms and Conditions for the Employment of Registrars (NTCER), a collaborative effort between GPRA and General Practice Supervision Australia (GPSA). The updated NTCER for the 2025-2026 period brings improvements aimed at making general practice an attractive, viable career path for the next generation of doctors.
Key changes include:
- Monthly billing cycle: The reduction of the billing cycle from 13 weeks to at least monthly payments is a historical win to ensure greater financial stability for registrars.
- GPT1/CGT1 base rate increase: A 7% increase over two years (plus annual MBS indexation), enhancing the appeal of GP training for hospital-based trainees.
- Contemporary provisions: Updates to educational release, fatigue management, and leave entitlements ensure that our registrars’ employment conditions remain aligned with current laws and training needs.
However, GPRA’s advocacy does not end here.
Last week in Canberra at the Parliamentary Friends of General Practice and GPRA Breakfast, hosted by Dr Sophie Scamps MP, GPRA presented a national plan for employment arrangements for GP registrars. At the forefront of our key asks of the Federal Government was a supplemental payment directly to registrars to achieve parity with non-GP registrar counterparts. Furthermore, this plan lobbied for a fund for study/exam leave and parental leave. GPRA will continue these conversations to ensure that our registrars have the support they need throughout their training, and all Australians have access to quality general practice care.
Our first-ever GPRA NT Annual Registrars Forum in Darwin held earlier this month was a resounding success, bringing together GP registrars from across the Northern Territory to share experiences, engage in valuable professional development, and celebrate our outstanding scholarship winners. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the 2024 recipients.
I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate the newly-elected Presidents of RACGP and ACRRM. We look forward to working closely with each of them as we continue our shared mission of improving the landscape of general practice in Australia.
Thank you for your continued commitment to general practice and for being part of the GPRA community.
Warm regards,
