SESSION 1

Management of patients – Patient Consultation structure

This session aims to improve the skills of registrars in maintaining safe clinical practice through effective consultation structure and communication skills.  

Participants will learn how to refine their consultation techniques to ensure patient safety and enhance the quality of care provided.  This session will also refine registrar skills in managing complex patient cases.

Dr Kate McCabe-Simon

Dr Kate McCabe-Simon is a General Practitioner working in Malvern East, Victoria. Kate enjoys the variety of presentations she is able to see in General Practice and her areas of interest are Women’s Health, Preventative Health and Paediatrics. Kate is a Medical Educator with the Royal Australian College of General Practice and delivers out of practice education to GP registrars in Melbourne.

Kate is also a director on the board of the General Practice Registrar Australia and is passionate about supporting registrars though their challenging and rewarding training programs.

Prior to medicine Kate completed a Masters of Public Health and Bachelor of Podiatry and worked for many years as a podiatrist. Kate completed her medical training at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle in 2015 and Fellowed with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2022.

Understanding different patient care systems – Medicare, Centrelink, NDIS and Veteran Affairs

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the different systems patient care can be delivered under such as the Medicare system as it pertains to consultations and billings in primary health care.

Through an in-depth exploration of Medicare regulations, billing codes, and reimbursement processes, you will learn how to effectively practice under the Medicare system as well as other systems such as Centrelink, NDIS and Veteran Affairs.

Dr Sunny Krishna

Dr Sudheendra (Sunny) Krishna is a practising general practitioner in Hawthorn and a newly appointed board member of the Eastern Melbourne PHN Clinical and Practice Council. He has a passion for educating the future medical workforce as a medical educator with the RACGP and University of Melbourne. Sunny loves spending time with his family, playing cricket and discovering new ways to make coffee.

Behind the scenes:  The business mechanics of general practice 

This session provides participants with a comprehensive overview of the business aspects which underpin general practice and what this means for your patient care. 

From understanding the financial and operational aspects of running a successful practice to navigating the complexities of healthcare regulations and insurance to delivering quality patient care, participants will take away tools from this session to getting the balance right.

Dr Hirruthyaa Manivasagan

FRACGP, DCH, MBBS

Hirru is a fellow of RACGP currently based in Melbourne. She splits her time between clinical practice and working as a medical educator for RACGP. She has a strong passion towards medical education and empowering registrars and fellow GP’s to practice self-care in order to prevent burnout and promote career longevity. Having grown up in rural Queensland, Hirru is appreciative of the challenges GP’s and registrars face practicing in regional Australia.

“Where a GP Career can take you: How to build a rewarding GP Career”

Dr Sonya Morrissey

Dr Sonya Morrissey has worked as a General Practitioner for more than twenty-five years, initially at Westcare Medical Centre in Melton, and since 2015 has been working with young people at headspace centres across North-Western Melbourne. For the past three years, she has been working for Orygen (Youth Mental Health) across their headspace centres providing clinical services and supervising GP registrars completing extended skills placements. Her role also involves working on implementing a model for physical health in the tertiary specialist streams. A significant part of her work involves providing care for young trans and gender-diverse people, including gender-affirming hormone therapy. For the last two years she has worked one day per week as GP for The Australian Ballet and Ballet School.

Mastering Clinical Excellence:  Case Review and Practise in GP Settings

This session will involve participants breaking into small groups to engage in case review and practise consultations with peers to help you master your clinical and communication skills.

This interactive approach aims to assist participants in working towards achieving Fellowship by:

  • enhancing their clinical competence in GP practice 
  • being equipped to navigate challenging communication situations with patients with conscience and composure

Dr Niroshe Amarasekera

Niroshe has been a Specialist GP in metropolitan Melbourne for nearly 15 years now. She is a medical educator, currently working at the RACGP and as a GP supervisor, and is passionate about supporting and mentoring the next generation of GPs.

Wrap up of Mastering Clinical Excellence: Practising in primary health care settings

In this final session, you will build on the first session of the day and learn further about:

  • tips for managing complex situations in primary healthcare settings
  • tips for maximising your teaching time with your training supervisor as well as
  • career longevity and enjoyment, effective billing, and structuring sessions to build sustainable patient numbers.
