Meet the sibling GPs behind the hit podcast helping trainees 'slay' the exam
South Australian GP siblings Dr David Lam and Dr Esther Lam are on a mission to help doctors in training level up their clinical skills, ace their exams, and thrive in general practice.
The duo are the brains behind GP Lyf Hacks, a free, high-energy podcast and video series that breaks down everything from dermatology and ENT tips to paediatrics, and everything in between — all with the goal of helping GPs in Training feel more confident and better prepared.
Now, the Lam siblings are bringing their passion and practical approach to GPRA’s upcoming three-part Exam Preparation – Ready, Set, Go webinar series this May.
“We started GP Lyf Hacks because we wanted to make learning fun, accessible and actually useful for GPs in Training,” said Dr David Lam, who was named RACGP Australian GP of the Year in 2019.
“There’s so much pressure during training and exam time. We wanted to create something that felt like support from a mate – who also happens to be a GP.”
The podcast first launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, when in-person training sessions were suddenly off the table.
“We didn’t want a single trainee to miss out on the quality teaching they deserved,” said David.
“So we got creative. We started recording the clinical hacks we were sharing with each other, and the response blew us away.”
That creativity — and clarity — paid off.
GP Lyf Hacks has since gained a huge following, with some episodes racking up over 1 million views.
Earlier this year, it was awarded a Qantas Regional Grant, which will help fund the next wave of podcasts, videos, and even in-person workshops.
The Lam duo’s exam prep sessions with GPRA will run across three Mondays — May 5, 12, and 19 — and are specifically designed to help GP registrars feel more confident heading into their RACGP and ACRRM fellowship exams.
“We’ll be sharing the best advice we wish we had when we were sitting the exams,” said David.
“It’s everything from how to structure your study week, to high-yield topics, to mindset tips to keep you on track.
“Whether you’re prepping for your first OSCE or re-sitting an AKT, this series will have something for you.
“We love seeing other GPs succeed – and we’re here to cheer you on.”
