You’ve recently Fellowed, now what do you need to know? This webinar is for you, led by a recently Fellowed GP who will share the lessons learned on the journey so far. Everyone’s journey is unique, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times. This session aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the common challenges and pitfalls that you may encounter.

  • Seeking expert advice: discover who to turn to for guidance on financial, accounting and legal matters

Dr Daniel Mogg is a general practitioner, medical educator and adviser. He graduated from the Australian National University School of Medicine and Psychology in 2018 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2024. He is the Medical Education and Training Advisor with GPRA and also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Australian National University School of Medicine and Psychology. Prior to this, Dr Mogg worked in various policy and program roles in the Commonwealth public service, and has a background in psychology.

Medico-legal essentials for General Practitioners: Navigating the legal landscape

This webinar is designed for those who require an understanding in medico-legal aspects. The transition to practising as a Fellowed GP involves not only medical expertise but also an understanding of the legal responsibilities that come with the profession. This session aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to navigate the medico-legal landscape, reduce your risk of facing a lawsuit, and ultimately provide the best care for your patients.  

You will learn:

  • What is Negligence: Explore what constitutes negligence in a medical setting, and how to avoid it
  • Informed Consent: Understand the importance of obtaining informed consent and the right way to do it
  • Documentation: Learn about the importance of thorough and accurate documentation in preventing legal issues
  • Dealing with Adverse Outcomes: Learn how to manage adverse outcomes and communicate effectively with patients when things don’t go as planned.

Tracy has been with Avant since 2015 and has over 24 years of experience in medico-legal complaint management. Before joining Avant, Tracy acted for healthcare professionals indemnified by the major Australian medical defence organisations and Queensland Health. Tracy was recognised as a pre-eminent practitioner in the Queensland Leading Medical Negligence Lawyers (Defendant), category of the Doyles Defendant Insurance Law rankings for 2023.

She is a director of the AEIOU Foundation, past president of the Medico-Legal Society of Queensland, former director of Queensland Doctors’ Health Programme, and currently a member of Uniting Care Human Research Ethics Committee.

This webinar is designed to help you navigate the considerations and financial aspects of this journey to provide you with the knowledge and confidence to take the next step in your medical career.
