GPRA supports future GPs in Adelaide to meet local GP peers
More than 70 future general practitioners (GPs) gathered at the University of Adelaide this week for a unique and dynamic ‘speed networking’ event aimed at fostering the next generation of GPs.
The GPSN Statewide Clinical Careers Night event, sponsored by General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) and expertly delivered by the local SA General Practice Students Network (GPSN) GP Clubs at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University, showcased the opportunities within the field of general practice.
The evening brought together 10 GP speakers representing varying sub-specialties, providing attendees with insights into the diverse facets of general practice.
The students engaged in a ‘speed networking’ format, with groups of 5-10 students rotating through 10-minute sessions with individual doctors.
This structure allowed students to delve into the daily lives of different working GPs, pose burning questions, and gain valuable perspectives on the journey to becoming a successful practitioner.
GPSN National Events Officer Chase Bolton said the event was a huge success.
“It’s important that medical students connect early with General Practice in their medical careers. If we want more GPs, we need to get students interested in the GP Speciality,” she said.
“The students loved meeting the different GPs, had loads of questions to ask, and had extensive conversations amongst the groups.
“The overwhelmingly positive feedback received underscores the event’s impact, with students finding it highly engaging and interactive.”
Ms Bolton said GPRA Registrar Advisor Dr Kim Omond played a pivotal role in the event’s planning, GP recruitment, and execution, demonstrating a commitment to nurturing future GPs.
GPRA President Dr Karyn Matterson emphasised the importance of such initiatives in inspiring the next generation of GPs.
“Events like these not only provide invaluable networking opportunities but also showcase the rewarding nature of general practice,’ Dr Matterson said.
“We know from research and our experience that peer-to-peer activities work – you can’t be what you can’t see.
“We want medical students to connect with GPs early in their career and this is why GPRA supports these type of events
“We are proud to support initiatives that promote excellence in primary healthcare and encourage medical students to pursue careers in this vital field.”
