What is an International Medical Graduate?

IMGs are anyone who has completed their qualifications at a medical school outside of Australia or New Zealand.
IMGs bring a wealth of experience and expertise to Australia, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity that enriches our healthcare system and the nation in general.

IMGs are essential to Australia meeting its health workforce demands over the coming years. Recent modelling suggests that there will be a shortage of over 11,000 full time equivalent GPs across Australia by 2032 (Deloitte, 2022). According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, from 2018 to 2022, almost 32% of all doctors in Australia were internationally trained and, in 2022, 42% of GPs had received their training abroad.

In addition, Australia offers a unique opportunity for IMGs to practice in a world-class health system, with diverse geographic and lifestyle options.

However, moving to Australia and training to become a GP can involve many challenges, both professional and personal. GPRA is here to support all future GPs in Australia.
