IMGs are essential to Australia meeting its health workforce demands over the coming years. Recent modelling suggests that there will be a shortage of over 11,000 full time equivalent GPs across Australia by 2032 (Deloitte, 2022). According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, from 2018 to 2022, almost 32% of all doctors in Australia were internationally trained and, in 2022, 42% of GPs had received their training abroad.
In addition, Australia offers a unique opportunity for IMGs to practice in a world-class health system, with diverse geographic and lifestyle options.
However, moving to Australia and training to become a GP can involve many challenges, both professional and personal. GPRA is here to support all future GPs in Australia.
