Who's who in a GP Practice?

GP practices can have many faces in them besides the GPs and the patients.

Practice Nurses

Practice nurses play a crucial role in supporting GPs and patients. Their duties can include wound care, immunizations, health assessments, chronic disease management, and patient education.

Practice Manager

The practice manager is responsible for the overall administration and business operations of the GP practice. This includes managing staff, finances, appointments, patient records, and ensuring the smooth running of the clinic.

Reception Team

The reception team is the first point of contact for patients, handling appointments, phone calls, patient registration, billing, and general administrative tasks. They are essential for maintaining an organized and welcoming front desk.

Allied Health Professionals

Many GP practices also include or have access to a range of allied health professionals. These can include:

  • Psychologists: Provide mental health support and counseling.
  • Dietitians: Offer advice on nutrition and healthy eating for various health conditions.
  • Physiotherapists: Help patients recover from injuries and manage musculoskeletal conditions through exercise and physical therapy.
  • Pathology Collectors: Take blood and other samples for laboratory testing.

Medical Students

Some clinics are teaching practices and will have medical students do time-limited placements with them. They will generally be allocated to a specific GP but you might also get to do some teaching yourself. This is a great opportunity to show them why general practice and rural generalism are great specialties.
