Tips for an interview with a Practice

Prepare

  • Research the clinic beforehand to tailor your answers to its patients, services, and team.
  • Confirm interview time, location, parking, and contact details in advance.
  • Review your application materials to ensure consistency in your responses.
  • Prepare a few questions to ask the interviewer (see below).

Practice

  • Practise answering interview questions with others or alone.
  • Prepare for common interview topics:

General questions (e.g. “Tell me about yourself”)

Clinical scenarios (e.g. Chest pain presentation in the community)

Patient care and problem-solving (e.g. handling uncertainty)

Professional interests and goals

  • If you lack general practice experience, refer to hospital experience instead.

Present

  • Dress professionally for any interview, online or in person.
  • Listen carefully and answer calmly and clearly.
  • Feeling nervous is normal; breathe deeply and take your time.

Questions you can ask

Save contract negotiations for after a job offer, but consider questions you may want to ask during interviews.

Topics may include:

  • The anticipated timeline for completing the recruitment process
  • Educational opportunities available at the practice
  • Whether off-site work (such as residential aged care) or after-hours responsibilities are required
  • Availability of part-time working arrangements
  • The number of registrars previously employed by the practice
