Prevocational GP placements

A prevocational GP rotation is your chance to expand your clinical skills, see the heart of patient-centred care, and build connections that will support you throughout your career.

These rotations benefit all prevocational doctors – regardless of future specialty – by:

  • Broadening clinical experience, especially in undifferentiated and chronic illness care (key AMC requirements for prevocational doctors)
  • Deepening understanding of the GP’s integral role in the health system
  • Strengthening links between hospital and community care

To make the most of your prevocational GP rotation:

  • Set clear learning goals with your supervisor and seek regular feedback.
  • Observe experienced GPs and discuss their clinical reasoning, diagnostic pathways, management, prescribing, and patient education.
  • Practice building rapport and clear communication.
  • Engage in a wide range of activities – preventive health, chronic disease management, acute care, and procedures.
  • Follow up on patients to track illness progression.
  • Develop strong clinical judgment even with limited investigations.
  • Become comfortable with uncertainty and ensure safe patient follow-up.
  • Utilise community resources and understand local referral pathways.
  • Network with staff and peers for future support.
