Negotiating a contract

Most GP registrars in Australia are employed by private GP clinics. There are differences in how registrars are employed depending on which training pathway they are on.
AGPT Registrars Non-AGPT Registrars
  • Generally employed as independent contractors
  • There are no minimum terms and conditions.
  • Registrars need to negotiate this themselves.
  • We encourage registrars to negotiate with practices to adopt as terms of their employment terms no less favourable than the minimum standards set out in the NTCER (to the extent possible).

*The exception is some registrars who work in community controlled health, Australian Defence Force Registrars, some Aboriginal Medical Services, and registrars on remediation who may have separate employment terms and conditions.

Use GPRA’s useful negotiation checklist and employment agreement templates to help you negotiate your contract.

While these are based on the NTCER for AGPT registrars, they provide a useful guide for all registrars when negotiating a contract.
