Cultural Language & Education Reimbursements - NT Members

Up to $500 is available for GPRA members in the Northern Territory (or moving to train/work in the NT Sem 2.2025 or Sem 1. 2026) to support cultural language and education learning.

GPRA is offering up to $500 in reimbursements to support health professionals working in the Northern Territory (or moving to train/work in the NT Sem 2.2025 or Sem 1. 2026) to strengthen their cultural capability through language learning and cultural education.

Background

Why Cultural Education Matters

Cultural safety is clinical safety.

Working in the Northern Territory means caring for patients from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, including some of Australia’s most remote First Nations communities.

Delivering culturally safe care is a national health priority* — and vital in the NT, where First Nations peoples represent over 70% of hospitalised patients** and more than 100 Aboriginal languages are spoken.

GPRA’s Cultural Education Reimbursement Scheme aims to support your growth in cultural awareness to:

  • Build trust with patients and their communities
  • Improve patient communication
  • Deliver safer, more respectful care.

The reimbursement scheme supports cultural safety and education development for GPRA members working in the Northern Territory up to 30 April 2026. Applicants can apply for cultural awareness and safety education, language courses and/or purchase relevant resources.

What you can claim for?

Cultural education examples:

First Nations Health Education
Education focused on the unique health needs, perspectives, and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This will help you to:

  • Provide more culturally safe care
  • Build trust with First Nations patients and communities
  • Understand health in a broader cultural and historical context.

Language Courses
Take language courses relevant to the region of your NT placement. This will help to:

  • Improve patient communication through local language skills
  • Break down language barriers
  • Show respect and care for community culture.

Cultural Immersion Activities
Consider hands-on learning through community-led events, experiences, and initiatives. These can help to:

  • Deepen cultural awareness and understanding of local issues through real-life connection
  • Build trust and stronger community relationships
  • Gain confidence in navigating cultural settings.

Please note: Cultural events and experiences must demonstrate cultural education of benefit to the health outcomes of the community.

Eligibility criteria

  • Successful reimbursement recipients will need to submit evidence of participation/payment for relevant course as well as submit a short learning reflection at the time of making the reimbursement submission
  • Must be GPRA member training/working in the NT, or due to train/work in the NT from Sem 2.2025 or Sem 1.2026
