GP Training Incentive Payments

The Australian Government’s GP Training Incentive Payments Policy has now been approved by the Minister for Health and published by the Australian Government.

From Semester One 2026, eligible GP registrars training through ACRRM, RACGP or RVTS on a Commonwealth-funded pathway will have access to three new incentives designed to encourage more doctors to specialise in general practice:

  • Salary incentive payment – $30,000 (for full-time registrars, pro-rated for part-time) paid over six months when commencing the first community-based GP training term.
  • Study leave incentive – equivalent to five days (38 hours) per training year to support exam preparation and professional development activities.
  • Parental leave incentive – 20 weeks for primary caregivers and two weeks for secondary caregivers, aligning with the National Terms and Conditions for the Employment of Registrars (NTCER) rates.

These incentives will help bridge the gap between hospital and community training, support GP registrars throughout their journey to Fellowship, and strengthen access to primary care for Australian communities.
