The workshop will include access to GPs and Medical Educators, practical advice and sessions on clinical skills, case review, clinical reasoning, consultation structure, communication skills and techniques.

This session aims to improve the skills of registrars in maintaining safe clinical practice through effective consultation structure and communication skills.  

Presenter – Dr Kate McCabe-Simon

Dr Kate McCabe-Simon is a General Practitioner working in Malvern East, Victoria. Kate enjoys the variety of presentations she is able to see in General Practice.  Her areas of interest are Women’s Health, Preventative Health and Paediatrics. Kate is a Medical Educator with the RACGP and delivers out of practice education to GP registrars in Melbourne.  Kate was a director on the board of the GPRA and is passionate about supporting registrars though their challenging and rewarding training programs. Prior to medicine Kate completed a Masters of Public Health and Bachelor of Podiatry and worked for many years as a podiatrist. Kate completed her medical training at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle in 2015 and Fellowed with the RACGP in 2022.

Gabe Warren, ANZ Commercial Director at Heidi Health, brings extensive experience in healthcare technology and strategic partnerships. With a proven track record at HotDoc and Evermed, Gabe is passionate about leveraging innovation to enhance patient care.

Navigating Medico-Legal Case Studies: Challenges, Lessons, and Best Practices

This interactive session will delve into various medico-legal case studies, exploring the complex interplay between medical practice and the law.

Presenter – Dr Hirruthyaa Manivasagan, Avant

Hirruthyaa is a fellow of RACGP currently based in Melbourne. She splits her time between clinical practice as a GP and also non-clinical work as a  medical adviser for Avant – a medicolegal defence organisation. She has previously been involved in teaching GP registrars as an RACGP medical educator. Hirruthyaa has a strong passion towards empowering doctors to prioritise their wellbeing whilst balancing the medicolegal and ethical responsibilities of a doctor. Having grown up in rural Queensland, Hirruthyaa is appreciative of the challenges rural GP registrars and GPs face when practising in regional Australia.

The session will provide practical skills and tips for participants to effectively maintain these connections while in training.

Decoding Patient Care Systems: Navigating Medicare, Centrelink, NDIS, and Veteran Affairs

Through an in-depth exploration of Medicare regulations, billing codes, and reimbursement processes, you will learn how to effectively practise under the Medicare system as well as other systems such as Centrelink, NDIS and Veteran Affairs.

Speaker – Dr Sunny Krishna

Dr Sudheendra (Sunny) Krishna is a practising general practitioner in Hawthorn and a newly appointed board member of the Eastern Melbourne PHN Clinical and Practice Council. He has a passion for educating the future medical workforce as a medical educator with the RACGP and University of Melbourne. Sunny loves spending time with his family, playing cricket and discovering new ways to make coffee.

SESSION 7

Achieving Clinical Excellence: Case Review and Practical Approaches in General Practice Settings

This session will involve participants breaking into small groups to engage in case review and practise consultations with peers to help you master your clinical and communication skills.

This interactive approach aims to assist participants in working towards achieving Fellowship by:

  • enhancing their clinical competence in GP practice
  • being equipped to navigate challenging communication situations with patients with conscience and composure.

Speaker – Dr Shruti Kotecha

Dr Shruti is a recently fellowed GP, having obtained her qualifications in early 2024. She is passionate about teaching and works as a medical educator with the RACGP alongside her clinical work at a practice in Melbourne’s south east. She was also a Registrar Liaison Officer during her training with the college.

Prior to joining GP, Shruti worked for three years as a hospital doctor gaining valuable experience in many areas including emergency medicine and women’s health. She enjoys all facets of general practice but has a particular interest for children’s health, having spent part of her training at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. Outside of work Shruti enjoys painting, travelling and spending time with friends & family.

Wrap up of Mastering Clinical Excellence: Practising in primary health care settings

In this final session, you will build on the first session of the day and learn further about:

  • tips for managing complex situations in primary health care settings
  • tips for maximising your teaching time with your training supervisor as well as
  • managing your earning and learning as you work towards Fellowship.
