President's Message

23 July 2026

Dear GPRA Members,

Welcome to our new registrars starting this training term, and to everyone who has recently moved practices, I hope the transition is going well. For those of us in the southern states, I hope you’re keeping warm. Canberra’s icy mornings still catch me by surprise every year!

The past month has been busy, with plenty of time spent listening to members, meeting with our sector partners, and ensuring GP registrars have a strong voice where it matters. I also managed a short break to celebrate my first wedding anniversary and travelled to the UK to attend a primary care conference at the University of St Andrews, where I studied medicine. Scotland didn’t quite get the results I was hoping for in the men’s FIFA World Cup, but it was great to watch the matches back in Scotland.

Last weekend we held our annual face-to-face President’s Advisory Council in Sydney (image in folder), bringing together Registrar Liaison Officers from both colleges, across all training pathways and every state and territory. We discussed the challenges registrars are facing today, but also the opportunities ahead. From there I travelled to Wollongong for the Australasian Association for Academic Primary Care’s Annual Research Conference, where it was inspiring to see almost 30 GP registrars presenting their research. We also hosted webinars to hear directly from members and answer questions. As always, if there’s something you’d like to raise, I’d love to hear from you at president@gpra.org.au.

Many of you will have heard about the unacceptable racism experienced by some of our colleagues in the Hunter region. GPRA stands firmly against racism and discrimination in all its forms. Australia’s healthcare system depends on the enormous contribution of overseas-trained doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. As an overseas-trained doctor myself, I want you to know that GPRA stands with you.

This newsletter includes opportunities to get involved in research and conferences, with even more available through GPRA Futures. I also encourage everyone to complete the National Registrar Survey if you haven’t already. Your feedback helps inform GPRA, the colleges and government about the registrar training experience.

Finally, I know many of you have recently received your StAMPS and CCE results. I remember how stressful that wait was. Whether your result was what you hoped for or not, please look after yourself and reach out for support if you need it.

Until next time,

Dr Chris Dickie
GPRA President
