MBS at a glance

The MBS allows GPs to bill for certain consultations provided via video or telephone, using specific telehealth item numbers (e.g. 90035 for a standard video consultation, 90051 for a standard phone consultation).

When billing for telehealth services, it is important to remember a few things:

  • Established relationship: For most standard GP telehealth items, the patient must be an existing patient of the practice, meaning they must have had at least one face-to-face service in the 12 months preceding the telehealth consultation. This rule does not apply to certain exemptions, such as patients attending an Aboriginal Medical Service, patients who are homeless or for babies under 12 months.
  • Timing requirements: Telehealth items have similar time-based descriptors to in-person attendance items (e.g. Level B, C, D) and require the same minimum time to be spent with the patient for billing.
  • Video preferred: Where clinically appropriate, video consultations are generally preferred over phone consultations. The item number used reflects the mode of communication.
