This month: Vaccination special

As the weather cools, it is important that we encourage patients to protect themselves from respiratory viruses. Vaccination remains one of the most effective, evidence-based approaches.

The Australian Government has launched a new campaign, encouraging older Australians to protect themselves. Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), the following vaccinations are free and recommended for:

  • Influenza – annually for those over 65 years of age
  • COVID – annually for those aged 65-74 and 6-monthly for those 75+
  • RSV – a once-off dose for those 75+ (available for the first time this year)

Of course, others are entitled to free influenza vaccinations under the NIP as well:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
  • Children aged 6 months to under 5 years
  • Pregnant women
  • People aged 6 months or over who have medical conditions that mean they have a higher risk of experiencing serious disease.

Also available for the first time this year, Flumist is a TGA-approved, needle-free nasal spray influenza vaccine available for children and adolescents aged 2 to less than 18 years. It is not covered under the NIP but NSW, Queensland, SA and WA are offering it free to children of varying ages.

The Sharing Knowledge About Immunisation (SKAI) website, also has useful information and resources for health professionals and the public, particularly when patients may be hesitant or declining vaccinations.
