GPRA statement on the 2026-2027 Federal Budget

The following statement can be attributed to Dr Chris Dickie, President, General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA):

“The 2026-27 Federal Budget highlights the complex challenges facing primary care in Australia, driven by community demand for greater access to a doctor under Medicare.

“We acknowledge the evident commitment to strengthen Medicare, reduce pressure on acute hospitals through urgent care clinics, and expand bulk billing clinics in regions like Newcastle and the Lower Hunter.

“However, the Budget’s measures signal a diversification in the type of primary care available, which fundamentally challenges the principles of continuity of care, holistic care, and the long-term viability of traditional general practice service models.

“GPRA is advocating to ensure that as the primary care landscape evolves, it does not undermine the appeal of general practice as a specialty for future doctors. We need viable, contemporary workplaces for the next generation.

“At a time when attracting and retaining doctors to train and stay in general practice is critical, we must ensure these changes do not fragment patient healthcare, dilute the GP specialty, or diminish the employment conditions for our future GPs.

“GPRA and our members welcome the investment in First Nations health, improvements to My Health Record, the Medical Research Fund and the Thriving Kids initiative, which are vital for supporting innovation, new treatments, and the future medical workforce. This is an area our members are interested in to help improve the health of all Australians.

“We will now consult with our members — the future of the sector — to guide our ongoing advocacy with Government and sector partners, ensuring that the next generation of General Practitioners can practise in contemporary, sustainable GP clinics.”
