Dr Jennifer Evans on the power of a GPRA NT Scholarship

Dr Jennifer Evans is encouraging GP registrars to apply for GPRA’s Northern Territory Scholarships before applications close this Friday (24 April) – after a scholarship experience that has meaningfully expanded her clinical capabilities and career trajectory.

A GP registrar undertaking her Advanced Skills Training (AST) in Paediatrics in the NT, Dr Evans is a 2025 recipient of the prestigious GPRA Professor Alan Walker Paediatric Scholarship, and says the recognition and financial support it has provided has been invaluable.

“Having an organisation such as GPRA provide these opportunities to GP Registrars in the NT is a real privilege,” Dr Evans said.

“It was lovely to be recognised for the work we put into our training with this scholarship, and I’m very grateful for the opportunities it has provided me with.”

For Dr Evans, the scholarship funding has been put to work in tangible, practical ways:

  • completing her Diploma of Child Health through Western Sydney University
  • enrolling in a Rural Echo Skills workshop to develop basic echocardiography skills, and
  • purchasing a portable otoscope camera to improve ear disease screening for children in remote communities.

“The scholarship money has definitely allowed me to complete some compulsory aspects of my clinical training,” she said.

“I’ve also seen it as an opportunity to invest in some extra skills, to broaden my skillset to be able to hopefully use that to better the health of our children and young people in rural and remote NT.”

Beyond the funding, Dr Evans speaks enthusiastically about the experience of training in the Territory itself – and why she believes it represents one of the best environments in the country for GP registrars.

“I truly think the Territory is one of the best places to train as a rural generalist,” she said.

“We are lucky enough to work with an incredibly diverse demographic of people, in some of the most remote locations in Australia.

“It is challenging in so many ways, but we are well recognised by our specialist colleagues in the hospitals, and supported to widen our breadth of experience and skills.”

It’s a sentiment that speaks directly to the purpose behind GPRA’s NT Scholarships program – supporting registrars to access extraordinary clinical opportunities in rural and remote settings, where the need for skilled, committed GPs is greatest.

Applications for the 2026 GPRA NT Scholarships close this Friday (24 April).
