MBS (and DVA) At A Glance

An important way civilian GPs and Rural Generalists support former members of the Australian Defence Force of “veterans” is through regular health checks.

The aim of these checks are to encourage early intervention and promote better health outcomes for veterans as they adjust to civilian life. There are two types of checks:

One-off Veteran Health Check

  • Anyone who transitioned from the ADF with at least one days’ continuous full-time service can access this one-off check at any time.
  • This check can be billed under Medicare items 701, 703, 705, or 707, based on the duration of the appointment, or fully funded for DVA Veteran Card holders.

Annual Veteran’s Health Check

  • Those who transitioned from the ADF from 1 July 2019 and served at least 1 days’ continuous full-time service, can also access an annual check for the first five year post-transition.
  • These are fully funded for DVA Veteran Card holders and can be billed under DVA items MT701, MT703, MT705, or MT707, depending on the appointment length.

DVA recommends a 45-minute appointment is scheduled for the checks.

Useful information on this service, including how to claim funding for it is available on the DVA website. Further information, including a guide on the assessment itself, is available here
