The General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC) has developed a new suite of resources to assist GPs in providing inclusive, trauma-informed and culturally safe care to patients from diverse backgrounds. These resources are particularly useful for registrars and early-career GPs who are beginning to navigate mental health consultations in general practice.

Each resource is developed in collaboration with GPs, a carer representative and a consumer representative, and are designed to support Mental Health Treatment Plans, offering practical tips to build trust, ask sensitive questions respectfully, and recognise when to proceed with caution. The resources highlight the GP’s vital role in addressing the unique needs of patients from diverse backgrounds who often face higher rates of distress, trauma, and barriers to care, in addition to recognising and acknowledging the importance of intersectionality among these and other populations.

The Specific Populations Resource Hub contains 5 individual resources, each focusing on a different population:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders – addresses important cultural aspects including the kinship system, sorry business, connections to Country, how to use culturally relevant language, understanding specific stigmas and comorbidities

  • Veterans – focuses on Veterans (and their carers), addressing topics including PTSD and trauma, exploring Veteran-specific experiences, working alongside the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA), and Veteran-specific administration guides

  • Refugees – addresses topics including disruption of education or healthcare, family separation, migration and resettlement, interpreter services, and visa guides

  • LGBTQIA+ – provides advice on how to use affirming and inclusive language, address relevant stigmas, and intersectionality
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) – addresses topics relating to people from culturally and linguistically diverse populations, including how to use culturally sensitive language, acknowledging different cultural beliefs and values, and accessing interpreter services
