Finding purpose in the Territory – Dr Fraser Tankel’s journey

Dr Fraser Tankel is encouraging future GPs to apply for GPRA’s Northern Territory Scholarships, after a training experience that has shaped his career.

Named the 2025 recipient of the GPRA Dr Debbie Stach Northern Territory GP Registrar of the Year Award, Dr Tankel’s journey highlights the unique opportunities available to registrars in the NT – and the role scholarships play in making those opportunities more accessible.

Training in the Northern Territory offers a breadth of clinical experience that is difficult to replicate elsewhere, with exposure to diverse presentations and the opportunity to build strong connections with patients and communities.

“Training in the NT has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” Dr Tankel said.

For Dr Tankel, the environment has supported significant professional growth, helping him build confidence and expand his clinical skills.

“You gain experience very quickly, and you’re supported every step of the way,” he said.

Equally important is the strong support network available to registrars in the NT, from supervisors and colleagues through to the wider community.

“There’s a real sense of support and teamwork – you’re never doing it alone,” Dr Tankel said.

GPRA’s Northern Territory Scholarships are designed to support registrars to access these opportunities.

“These scholarships make a real difference in helping registrars take up opportunities in the NT,” he said.

For those already training in the NT, there are scholarships which provide valuable financial support and recognition, helping to ease the pressures of training while continuing to build skills and experience.

For those considering a move, the Kanyini Scholarships also offer significant financial support to relocate and train in one of Australia’s most unique and rewarding clinical environments.

For Dr Tankel, the experience has had a lasting impact on his development as a GP.

“I’d strongly encourage anyone considering it to apply,” he said.

If you’re looking to broaden your experience, accelerate your development, and make a meaningful impact in rural and remote communities, now is the time to apply.
