GPRA statement on the 2025 National Registrar Survey

The following statement can be attributed to Dr Chris Dickie, President, General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA):

The 2025 National GP Registrar Survey confirms that registrar satisfaction with training in Australia remains high, while reinforcing the importance of continued focus on wellbeing, workforce sustainability, retention and supportive employment conditions for future GPs.

Registrar wellbeing remains a key priority. While most registrars report access to personal support networks, the survey highlights that international medical graduates (IMGs) and those who relocate for training can face additional pressures.

GPRA has advocated that the training system needs to better support IMGs and overseas-trained doctors (OTDs), who work tirelessly across many Australian communities. This underlines the importance of targeted wellbeing support and independent advocacy throughout GP training.

The survey also highlights growing engagement with GPRA. Compared with 2024, a substantially higher proportion of respondents identified as GPRA members in 2025, with 94 per cent reporting satisfaction with GPRA’s support, reinforcing our organisation’s role as a trusted national advocate for GP and rural generalist (RG) registrars.

Over the past year, GPRA has significantly strengthened our national industrial advisory role and custodianship of the National Terms and Conditions for the Employment of Registrars (NTCER). Our provision of clear, freely available information on registrar employment conditions across all pathways has supported both trainees and practices, improving compliance, clarity and confidence, and contributing to fewer employment-related disputes.

At GPRA, we remain committed to working constructively with Colleges, governments and training partners to strengthen GP/RG training, improve registrar wellbeing, and support and retain a sustainable workforce that meets the needs of communities across Australia.

As we celebrate our 25th year as the independent national peak body representing future GPs, GPRA will continue to ensure the registrar’s voice is heard, informed by robust national data and the lived experience of registrars across all pathways.
