President's Message

29 January 2026

Dear GPRA Members,

This year marks GPRA’s 25th anniversary – a milestone we’ll be celebrating throughout the year, including coming together in South Australia next month to recognise 25 years of advocating for GP/RG registrars – the future – and supporting you through training.

This edition features an interview with GPRA’s inaugural Chair from 2001, WA-based Dr Meredith Arcus – who provides a fascinating insight into GPRA’s original foundations.

There’s plenty more planned to celebrate our 25th this year, so as a member, stay tuned for further anniversary highlights and offers!!!!

2026 is also a landmark moment for GP/RG training. The Australian Government’s GP Training Incentive Payments Policy and new employment arrangements for AGPT registrars under the National Consistent Payments framework commence from Semester 1. GPRA is closely monitoring the rollout, and I’d like to remind you that if you experience any issues or have feedback– particularly in these early stages – please get in touch with GPRA.

Our priorities for the year ahead remain firmly focused on you – strong advocacy, practical and relevant education, registrar wellbeing, and ensuring your voice continues to be heard where it matters most.

I’d also like to welcome Dr Emily Hatwell to her new role as GPRA Registrar Advisor. Emily brings valuable experience and insight, and I’m confident she will be a great asset to GPRA members. You can read more about Emily in this newsletter.

To all new GP/RG registrars commencing Orientation Weeks – welcome.

You are entering training at a time of renewed focus and opportunity. There has never been a better time to choose to be a GP or RG, and GPRA is here to support you every step of the way.

Until next time,

Dr Chris Dickie
GPRA President
