Meet your new GPRA Registrar Advisor – Dr Emily Hatwell

South Australian Dr Emily Hatwell is our newly-appointed GPRA Registrar Advisor. Read her story and find out how she’ll be supporting registrars throughout their training journey.

From music to medicine

“I grew up in suburban Adelaide and originally went to university to study music. I enjoyed my studies but eventually decided that being a musician sounded like too much hard work – so medicine seemed like a more suitable choice! At medical school I was interested in almost everything, but I’ve always been someone who values creativity and having time to explore my interests, so I wanted to find a realistic career path that would allow me to do both.”

Finding her place in general practice

“Once I started working in the hospital system, I often felt frustrated by the hierarchical and bureaucratic nature of care, where we were required to simply follow processes and protocols. What drew me to general practice was the opportunity to be more self-directed (within scope) and creative, working collaboratively with patients to manage their concerns in a way that is evidence-based and meaningful in the context of their lives.

“I also love caring for whole families and being a consistent resource and listener as people move through different stages of life.”

One of the things I enjoyed most about being a GP registrar was working alongside GPs, nurses and practice staff I respected, and I learned so much from. The collaborative nature of general practice and the relationships formed along the way really stood out to me.

The value of collaboration

“One of the things I enjoyed most about being a GP registrar was working alongside GPs, nurses and practice staff I respected, and I learned so much from. The collaborative nature of general practice and the relationships formed along the way really stood out to me.

“That sense of community is what motivated me to get involved with GPRA – to support registrars and give back in the same way that others supported me during my training.”

Current work and teaching

“I’m currently working part time in Adelaide as a newly fellowed GP, and I’ve also begun teaching medical students from the University of Adelaide during their GP placements.”

Life, training and perspective

“During my training, I was fortunate to have my first child and experienced first-hand the financial challenges of parental leave, along with the juggle of caring for an infant, studying for exams, working, and navigating the inevitable stream of childcare-related illnesses.

“That experience highlighted just how complex life can be during training, and how competing priorities can add pressure for many registrars.”

Supporting registrars through GPRA

“Throughout my training, I found GPRA’s wellbeing and exam preparation resources particularly helpful. I’m really looking forward to supporting registrars through the challenges of training and offering peer support grounded in lived experience.”

Outside of medicine

Outside of medicine, Emily enjoys singing – including performing in her own children’s show The Tiny Tunes Jazz Club at this year’s Adelaide Fringe – spending time with her family at their local café, and devouring books in a single sitting.
