GPRA welcomes announcement rural generalists to be recognised as medical specialty

General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) welcomes the recent Australian Government announcement that rural generalist medicine has been formally recognised as a new specialty field within general practice.

This long-awaited recognition reflects the critical role that rural generalists play in delivering high-quality, comprehensive care for rural and remote communities across Australia.

Many future rural generalists are members of GPRA, and we are really proud that their commitment to train and practice in rural and remote parts of Australia has been formally recognised.

Rural generalists are often the backbone of local health services – providing primary care, emergency care, and advanced skills in areas such as obstetrics, anaesthetics, mental health, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

The following statement can be attributed to GPRA President Dr Chris Dickie:

“This recognition is a historic milestone for rural medicine and for the thousands of registrars who will form the future GP and rural generalist workforce.

“Formal recognition of rural generalists as medical specialists gives this career pathway the visibility and value it deserves, and will help attract more doctors to rural and regional practice.

“At GPRA, we represent almost 20,000 future GPs, and now rural generalists – from medical students and prevocational doctors to registrars and new fellows – and we know how important this recognition is for those considering a rural career.

“It provides certainty, prestige, and the reassurance that their additional training, skills, and contributions will be appropriately recognised and remunerated.

“This is not only good news for our members, but for rural and remote communities right across Australia who rely on rural generalists for essential healthcare.”
