The General Practice Students Network is the first national organisation of its kind in Australia with a focus on General Practice. In addition to promoting General Practice, the GPSN provides a forum by which members can provide essential feedback on medical student issues relating to General Practice, now and into the future.
GPSN produces a number of educational and professional resources for medical students, including a series of publications, academic and social events and regular communication via electronic means to promote General Practice.
The work done by the GPSN is supported by its parent organisations, GPRA and AMSA, who both recognise the growing importance of the role General Practice will play in the future of Australia’s health workforce. GPSN works with AMSA on policy development, representation on pertinent stakeholder organisations and the release of statements to the media. GPSN is also part of the corporate structure of GPRA, a not-for-profit organisation and has been recently listed as a 'Health Charity'.
GPSN also seeks to work with other key stakeholders in General Practice including state and federal Government, GPET, AMA, RACGP, ACRRM, RDAA, Divisions of General Practice and RTPs.

GPSN will promote General Practice across all continuums and set the benchmark for excellence for the future of General Practice in Australia by fostering the highest standards of professional competence, academia, research and ethical practice.
GPSN has four primary aims that are key to its mission; these include:
- To promote the specialty of General Practice through student representatives and clubs at each Australian Medical School
- To provide an avenue for medical students to nurture an interest in General Practice
- To facilitate networking between medical students interested in General Practice in addition to liaising with various stakeholders to optimise exposure to General Practice
- To liaise with its parent bodies, GPRA and AMSA on issues relating to General Practice
Whilst not a recruitment-driven body, the GPSN works to empower medical students to make informed decisions, when it comes to choosing their future vocation. It also seeks to correct misconceptions that have hindered progressive thinking in the medical workforce in the past. Promoting General Practice as a career is important but secondary to the idea of instilling the importance of General Practice’s role in the overall medical landscape into the perception of all medical students and the wider community.
